The Tree of Life

The Kabbalah is an ancient mystical system for explaining the universe. It was said that the Prophet Moses received three things whilst on Mount Sinai:  The Ten Commandments - The Written Law (Torah); The Mishneh - The Oral Law and the Kabbalah.

The Kabbalah provides a means by which God can express within the universe. This is done through ten emanations or Sephirah. These emanations arise out of three preliminary states that are considered to precede creation. The first is a state of complete nullity, known as Ain (nothing); the second state, considered a "concentration" of Ain, is Ain Soph (without limit, infinite); the third state, caused by a "movement" of Ain Soph, is Ain Soph Aur (limitless light), and it is from this initial brilliance that the first emanation of creation originates in Kether, the first Sephirah of the Tree-of-Life or Kabbalah. From Kether emanates the remaining Sephirah in turn, viz. Kether (1), Chokhmah (2), Binah (3), Daath, Chesed (4), Geburah (5), Tiphareth (6), Netzach (7), Hod (8), Yesod (9), and Malkuth (10). Note that Daath is not assigned a number as it is considered to be either a false or hidden Sephirah.

The Names and Aspects of the ten Sephirah are:

  • Kether (Crown or Will)
  • Chochmah (Wisdom)
  • Binah (Understanding)
  • Chesed (Mercy or Loving Kindness)
  • Gevurah or Gedulah (Severity or Judgement)
  • Tipheret (Beauty or Harmony)
  • Netzach (Victory)
  • Hod (Glory)
  • Yesod (Foundation)
  • Malkuth (Kingdom)

While God may seem to exhibit dual natures (masculine-feminine, compassionate-judgemental, creator-destroyer), followers of Kabbalah stress the ultimate unity of God, and that all parts of God are from the same source.

The Divine Lightning Bolt

The Divine Lightning Bolt is an attempt by God to reconnect with man, after the fall of man, God became disconnected from us and us from God. The Lightning Bolt moves downwards through the Tree-of-life in a zig-zag motion from Kether to Chokhmah back to Binah and down to Malkuth. While man attempts to reconnect with God by moving upward through the Tree, God moves down the tree to meet with us.

The Three Pillars

There are Three Pillars used in Kabbalah namely; Boaz (severity) - on the left, The Middle Pillar (mildness) and Jachin (mercy) - on the right. This is supposedly looking into the Temple where you will be performing your pathworking towards a better understanding of self and the universe.

The Four Worlds

The Four Worlds begin with Atziloth, being about Impulse and Archetype; followed by Briah, which is about the Actor and Creative; then Yetzirah being Pattern and Formation and finally Assiah which is Matter and Action.

Kabbalah is a complex topic and I have only included the very basics on this page.
Please meditate on Malkuth to gain further understandings and
gain entrance to The Tree Of Life itself.
